How does one become more courageous and brave?
All of us deal with and face fear. Most of us try to avoid it, or run away from it, but sometimes we confront it and do something about it. What does it take or what could one do to become more courageous or brave in the face of fear? Specific answers would be good. We already know the obvious stuff like “Be tough.” I’m asking how? What, specifically, can one do?
Oh yeah the famous “Be tough”, never figured that advice was worth much, so lets see if I can do any better.
If I was looking for the kind of courage or bravery of a hero, I think I would look to the statement that a hero isn’t a person that isn’t afraid, but at person despite being afraid does something anyway. But why? I would say because the person felt what was to be gained, was worth the chance, and the price. So setting your sites on something that you think is worth the price seems like a good start. After it might even be better to try a different way. Some times what looks like the best way at first the “brave” way might actually be the coward’s way, like beating someone up.
But then those things that aren’t possible, or at least don’t seem that way. The kind where the only way is to realize that everything starts with a simple step. Human’s are made to fear the unknown, even if the unknown might be safer then the known.
So we have to decide what we want, and then we have to find that first step, make it known, and then take the next.
How do you learn to walking a battle zone, where you might get killed? Militaries have got people to do this, and they have done mostly without putting a gun up to the back of the people. So how do they do it? Certainly people are all different, and so it will be different for different people, but they have learned, that if they start teaching the skills they are going to need, and practice them over and over, and yes learn to trust others, and such they can get most people that come to them to be “brave”.
So to me it is about going after something you want, one step at a time, and practicing what you can, so that you change the unknown into the known.
