Is the time right for American Indians to organize and form their own Native American Party?
Do you think if American Indians formed a political party that it would be well received?
Interesting question…
A political party gets it power from the strength of its NUMBERS and how many votes it can actually deliver to a candidate. As Native Americans only make up about 1-2% of the US population…I’m not sure how effective it would be. Also, we are not monolithic…even amongst such a small total population, there is a wide variety of cultures/worldviews…and political leanings.
It is much better to foster political alliances with both major political parties and strengthen the “Nation to Nation” relationship that tribes have with the federal government. We are in a unique situation and cannot become too partisan at the expense of our sovereignty. We have to play the open field in other words…it IS a two party system in this country.
Plus, we pretty much use the NCAI as forum for political discussion and organizing. But, even within this context, there is concern on the part of some tribal delegates that we should not overreach with issuing official NCAI positions. Again, there is always concern that individual TRIBES should be dealt with as DISTINCT nations…that we shouldn’t be seen as this monolithic bloc…as “the Indians.” We are not like any other ethnic group in this country…we actually represent political entities…or NATIONS. A Native American political party would be rather superfluous…in my humble opinion.
